Idle Speed: Adjustments
Curb Idle
With Feedback Carburetor
1. Disconnect and plug purge vacuum hose at vapor canister.
2. Connect a dwell meter to single wire taped to mixture control solenoid wires at carburetor. Set dwell meter on 6 cylinder scale.
3. Connect tachometer to engine.
4. Apply parking brake. Place manual transmission in neutral; automatic in drive.
CAUTION: Use extreme care when engine is running. Do not stand in direct line with the fan. Do not place hands near pulley, belts or fan. Do
not wear loose clothing.
5. Start engine and allow to reach normal operating temperature. Dwell meter needle should now he oscillating between 10 and 50 degrees.
Maximum sweep of needle oscillation should cover a 15 degree segment. If not, the Computer Control system should be checked.
6. Momentarily open throttle to allow idle solenoid to he fully extended. Adjust curb idle speed by turning solenoid adjusting screw.
7. Disconnect solenoid wire and adjust carburetor curb idle speed to 500 rpm, then reconnect solenoid wire.
With Non-Feedback Carburetor
CAUTION: Apply parking brake and block drive wheels. Place manual transmission in neutral; automatic in drive. Do not accelerate engine.
1. Start engine and allow to reach normal operating temperature. Connect tachometer to engine.
2. Adjust curb idle speed to specifications using curb idle screw. On carburetors with an idle solenoid, proceed as follows:
a. On 2SE carburetors, adjust curb idle speed by turning solenoid idle screw.
b. On BBD and YF carburetors, turn solenoid plunger to adjust. Tighten locknut if used.
c. On 2100, 2150, 4300 and 4350 carburetors, turn hex screw on solenoid carriage to adjust.
d. On all models with idle solenoid, disconnect solenoid wire and adjust curb idle speed using curb idle screw to 500 rpm, then reconnect
solenoid wire.
3. If carburetor is equipped with a dashpot:
a. With throttle at curb idle position, fully depress dashpot stem and measure between step and throttle lever. Clearance should be 0.093 ± 0.015
inch on 6 cylinder engines 0.093 ± 0.032 inch on 1980 V8 engines and 0.032 inch on 1981-82 engines. If necessary, adjust by loosening
locknut and turning dashpot.
