Compressor Shaft Seal: Service and Repair

Precaution on Shaft Seal
Shaft seal should not be replaced if only small amounts of oil are noted on adjacent surfaces. Shaft seal should only be replaced if a large
amount of sprayed oil is observed, and then only after actual refrigerant leakage is found using an approved leak test procedure. If compressor
seal must be replaced, the accumulator in systems using this compressor must also be removed in order to properly gauge the amount of oil that
must be added to the system.
Removal
1.
Discharge refrigerant system and remove compressor drive belt.
2.
Reposition compressor, as needed, to gain access to clutch assembly and seal, or remove compressor and mount in suitable holding fixture.
3.
Remove clutch plate and hub assembly as outlined.
4.
Remove shaft seal retaining ring, then thoroughly clean area around seal to prevent dirt from entering compressor.
5.
Insert seal replacement tool J-23128-A or equivalent into seal, fully engage knurled tangs of tool into recessed portion of seal by turning tool
clockwise, then remove seal with a rotary/pulling motion.
6.
Remove and discard seal O-ring using J-9553 or equivalent.
7.
Thoroughly clean seal O-ring groove in front head.
8.
Inspect compressor shaft and seal mounting surface, and clean or repair as needed.
Installation
1.
Dip new seal O-ring in clean refrigerant oil, assemble O-ring on installer J-33011, then insert installer into compressor neck until it bottoms.
2.
Lower moveable slide on installer to release O-ring into lower groove in compressor neck, rotate installer to seat O-ring, then remove installer.
3.
Attach new seal to replacement tool J-23128-A, dip seal in clean refrigerant oil and insert protector J-34614 into seal.
4.
Install seal and installation tools in compressor and push seal into position with rotary motion.
5.
Remove seal protector and installer, install new seal retaining ring with flat side toward seal, then press ring into place until it snaps into groove.
6.
Wipe away excess oil, then reinstall clutch plate and hub assembly.
7.
Reinstall compressor and adjust drive belt to specifications.
8.
Ensure that system is properly charged with refrigerant oil. Evacuate and discharge system, then check for leaks.
