Camshaft Housing Bolt Tightening Sequence

NOTE: Use the reverse of the tightening procedure when loosening camshaft housing to cylinder head retaining bolts.

8. Exhaust camshaft housing to cylinder head bolts.

-

Leave two bolts loosely in place to hold the camshaft housing while separating camshaft cover from housing.

9. Push the cover off the housing by threading four (4) of the housing to head retaining bolts into the tapped holes in the camshaft cover.

NOTE: Tighten the bolts in evenly so the cover does not bind on the dowel pins.

10. Remove the two loosely installed cam housing to head bolts and remove cover, discard gaskets.
11. Loosely reinstall one camshaft housing to cylinder head bolt to retain the housing during camshaft and lifter removal.
12. Notice the position of the chain sprocket dowel pin for reassembly. Remove camshaft being careful not to damage the camshaft or journals.

12. Valve lifters. Keep lifters in order so they can be reinstalled in the same location.

To minimize lifter bleed down:

-

Store lifters upside down (opposite installed position) on a level surface and

-

Store the lifters submerged in clean engine  oil.

NOTE: These lifters are not serviceable. If faulty, they must be replaced.

13. Cam housing and gasket.

Inspect

-

Make sure the alignment dowel pins are In the cylinder head prior to installing the camshaft housing.

Inspect Camshaft

-

Sprocket.

-

Keyway and threads.

Inspect Bearing surfaces and lobes for:

-

Wear

-

Galling

-

Gouges

-

Overheating (Discoloration)

NOTE: Do not attempt to repair the camshaft, replace it if damaged. If a new camshaft is installed, all valve lifters actuated by that camshaft must
also be replaced.

Measure bearing journal diameter with a micrometer. If out of specification, replace the camshaft.
