Timing Cover: Service and Repair
REMOVAL
1989 Models
1.
Remove drive belts, then raise and support vehicle.
2.
Remove right front tire and wheel assembly, then inner fender splash shield.
3.
Remove Crankshaft dampener, then front cover attaching bolts, front cover and oil seal.
1990-91 Models
1.
Remove drive belts, then power steering pump bolts and lay pump aside.
2.
Raise and support vehicle, then remove right front wheel and tire assembly.
3.
Remove inner fender splash shield, then right hand cover.
4.
Remove flywheel cover using a suitable tool to prevent flywheel rotation.
5.
Remove bolt and washer, then balancer and key.
6.
Remove front cover attaching bolts, then front cover and oil seal.
INSTALLATION
1989 Models
1.
Apply a 3/8 inch wide by 3/16 inch thick bead of RTV sealant to joint at oil pan and front cover.
2.
Apply a 1/4 inch wide by 1/8 inch thick bead of RTV sealant to front cover at cylinder block mating surfaces.
3.
Install oil seal to front cover using tool No. J-34995 or equivalent and leave installed in front cover oil seal bore.
4.
Install front cover and partially tighten 2 opposing front cover screws with tool in place.
5.
Install remaining cover to block screws and torque to 89 inch lbs., then remove tool.
6.
Install crankshaft balancer, bolt and washer and torque to 162 ft. lbs.
7.
Install inner fender splash shield, then right front tire and wheel assembly.
8.
Lower vehicle, then install drive belts.
1990-91 Models
1.
Apply a 3/8 inch wide by 3/16 inch thick bead of RTV sealant to joint at oil pan and front cover.
2.
Apply a 1/4 inch wide by 1/8 inch thick bead of RTV sealant to front cover at cylinder block mating surfaces.
3.
Install oil seal to front cover using tool No. J-34995 or equivalent and leave installed in front cover oil seal bore.
4.
Install front cover and partially tighten 2 opposing front cover screws with tool in place.
5.
Install remaining cover to block screws and torque to 89 inch lbs., then remove tool.
6.
Install key, balancer, washer and bolt using a suitable tool to prevent flywheel rotation and torque bolt to 162 ft. lbs.
7.
Install flywheel cover, then right hand cover.
8.
Install inner fender splash shield, then right front wheel and tire assembly.
9.
Lower vehicle, then install power steering pump.
10.
Install drive belts.
