Vacuum Pump: Description and Operation
Some GM transverse mounted gasoline engine models and all transverse mounted diesel engine models are equipped with a belt driven vacuum pump
which aids the engine to maintain a proper vacuum level for the power brake system. On diesel engine applications, the vacuum pump also operates the
EGR system, heater, A/C system and cruise control, as equipped.
The pump is operated by a belt-driven pulley which turns the pump shaft. The shaft runs a cam which operates a spring-loaded diaphragm in the pump.
