Canister Purge Solenoid: Description and Operation

Canister Purge Solenoid Valve Location

PURPOSE

The purge solenoid is a normally closed vacuum solenoid valve. It is used to contain fuel and vapors in the canister and evaporative system until
conditions are right for purging them into the engine where they can be burned.

OPERATION

The purge solenoid gets battery voltage when the ignition is turned "ON", and becomes energized when the PCM completes the circuit to ground.
When energized, the solenoid opens the purge valve allowing fuel and vapor from the canister to be directed into the intake system to be burned. The
PCM energizes the solenoid under the following conditions:

1.

Engine has been running at least 3 minutes.

2.

Engine is at normal operating temperature.

3.

Vehicle speed is greater than 3 MPH.

4.

Throttle open greater than 3%.

NOTE: The PCM will also energize the purge solenoid when the diagnostic test terminal is grounded with the ignition turned "ON" and the engine not

running.
