Bulletin 86-3-11
Date

Ref. No. 86-170-3
SUBJECT:
TILT STEERING COLUMN NOISE OR SQUEAKS
MODELS AFFECTED:
ALL WITH TILT STEERING COLUMNS
Some vehicles equipped with tilt or tilt and telescope steering columns may experience a squeaking noise when turning the steering wheel in a tilted
position. This can be caused by insufficient grease in the tilting mechanism.
Step 1 - To Check For This Condition:
1.
Start engine.

2.
Position steering wheel in the full up position, Figure 1.
3.
Touching only the rim (so the center pad does not cause a squeak), turn the steering wheel back and forth to the extreme left and right position.
4.
Repeat this procedure at straight on position, and full down position.
Step 2 - To Repair This Condition:
1.
Tilt steering wheel to full up position.
