Fuel Pressure Release: Service and Repair

WARNING:  To reduce the risk of fire and personal injury, it is necessary to relieve the fuel system pressure before servicing fuel system
components.

After relieving system pressure, a small amount of fuel may be released when servicing fuel lines or connections.  In order to reduce the chance
of personal injury, cover fuel line fittings with a shop towel before disconnecting to catch any fuel that may leak out.  Place the towel in an
approved container when disconnect is completed.

When servicing the fuel system use the following precautions:

Put a "CAUTION FLAMMABLE" sign in the workshop.

Be sure shop is supplied with an adequate fire extinguisher.

Be sure to disconnect the negative battery cable before any service work is done.

Use a suitable container to catch any fuel that may leak from system during service.

Always relieve fuel system pressure before disconnecting any lines.

If the key must be turned "ON" while servicing fuel system, always disconnect or disable ignition, to insure no sparks occur near fuel vapors.

FUEL PRESSURE RELIEF PROCEDURE

1.  Disconnect negative battery terminal to avoid possible fuel discharge if an accidental attempt is made to start the engine.

2.  Loosen fuel filler cap to relief tank vapor pressure.

3.  Connect gage J-34730-1, or equivalent, to the fuel pressure test port. Wrap a shop towel around the fitting while connecting gage to avoid spillage.

4.  Install bleed hose into an approved container and open valve to bleed system pressure. Fuel connections are now safe for serviceing.

5.  Drain any fuel remaining in gage into an approved container.

6.  After battery negative terminal is reconnected following servicing, perform IDLE LEARN PROCEDURE.
