Spark Plug Wire: Description and Operation
Spark Plug Wire Replacement
CONSTRUCTION
The spark plug wiring connects the Ignition Control Module (ICM) to the spark plugs. It incorporates several plastic channels and conduits to
keep it properly positioned and to protect it. The spark plug wiring is 7 mm in diameter and the outer jacket is made of silicone to withstand high
temperatures. The silicone jacket is also an excellent insulator for the high voltages used in the ignition system. The silicone spark plug boots
provide a tight seal on the spark plug. Care should be exercised when connecting a timing light or other equipment. Do not force anything between
the boot and wiring or through the silicone jacket. Connections should be made using an appropriate adapter.
SPARK PLUG WIRE BOOTS
The spark plug wire boots contain Flourohydrocarbon (FHC) grease as a lubricant, which will last the entire life of the spark plug wires, which
makes future FHC grease application unnecessary. This coating is clear with a slightly waxy feel. The coating helps prevent the silicone spark plug
boot from sticking to the spark plug ceramic. This greatly reduces the effort required to remove and install the spark plug boot and spark plug
wires. If silicone type lubricants are added to FHC coated spark plug boot, carbon tracking of spark plugs may occur.
NOTICE: It is important that technicians wash their hands after handling coated spark plugs and before smoking. The coating itself is a
non-hazardous material and incidental contact will not cause any adverse effects. However, exposure to polymer vapors, the result of
contamination of cigarette products and subsequent burning of the polymer, may result in flu-like symptoms and should be avoided.
