Transmission Fluid Checking Procedure

Turbo Hydra-Matic 4T60-E Automatic Transaxle

To check fluid, drive vehicle for at least 15 minutes to bring fluid to operating temperature (200° F). With vehicle on a level surface and engine
idling in Park and parking brake applied, the level on the dipstick should be at the FULL mark. To bring the fluid level from the ADD mark to the
FULL mark requires one pint of fluid. If vehicle cannot be driven sufficiently to bring fluid to operating temperature, the level on the dipstick
should be between the two dimples on the dipstick with fluid temperature at 70° F. Note that the two dimples are located above the FULL mark.
An early change to a darker color from the usual red color and/or a strong odor that is usually associated with overheated fluid is normal and
should not be considered as a positive sign of required maintenance or unit failure. When adding fluid, do not overfill, as foaming and loss of fluid
through the vent may occur as the fluid heats up. Also, if fluid level is too low, complete loss of drive may occur especially when cold, which can
cause transmission failure.

Every 100,000 miles, the oil should be drained, the oil pan removed, the screen cleaned and fresh fluid added. For vehicles subjected to more
severe use such as heavy city traffic especially in hot weather, prolonged periods of idling or towing, this maintenance should be performed every
15,000 miles.

Turbo Hydra-Matic 4T80-E Automatic Transaxle

COLD TRANSAXLE FLUID

This procedure is valid when vehicle is cold, has not been driven and transmission fluid temperature is between 70° and 90° F. The vehicle should
be parked on a level surface. Approximately five minutes are available to finish this procedure before cold temperature is exceeded and the test
becomes invalid.

1. Apply brake and start engine.
2. Hold brake and move shifter through each gear range, pausing three seconds in each. Return shifter to Park.
3. Apply parking brake and allow engine to idle for two to three minutes.
4. For remainder of test, shifter should be in Park, parking brake should be applied and foot brake NOT applied (foot brake will affect oil level).
5. Remove dipstick and wipe clean, then insert dipstick for three seconds and pull out.
6. Check both sides of dipstick. Fluid level on lower side must be in cold range of indicator.
7. If level is in cold range, no level adjustment is necessary.
8. If level is not in cold range, add fluid until level reaches middle of cold range. Transaxle will need to be warmed and fluid level checked again.

HOT TRANSAXLE FLUID

Wait at least 30 minutes before checking transaxle fluid if the vehicle has been driven when the outside temperature is above 90° F, at high speed
for an extended period of time and/or in heavy traffic (especially in hot weather). To obtain an accurate reading, the fluid must be at normal
operating temperature (180°-200° F). Bring the vehicle up to operating temperature by driving about 15 miles when outside temperature is above
50 if.

1. Park vehicle on level surface, then place shifter in Park.
2. Apply brake, move shifter through each gear range, pausing for three seconds in each range, then place shifter in Park.
3. Apply parking brake, then allow engine to idle for three to five minutes.
4. For remainder of test, shifter should be in Park, parking brake should be applied and foot brake should NOT be on applied (foot brake will affect

oil level).

5. Remove dipstick and wipe clean, then insert dipstick for three seconds and pull out.
6. Check both sides of dipstick. Fluid level on lower side must be in hot range of indicator.
7. If level is in hot range, no level adjustment is necessary.
8. If level is not in hot range, add fluid until level reaches middle of hot range.
