Idle Speed: Adjustments

The minimum idle speed screw, used to regulate the minimum idle speed of the engine, is pre-adjusted at the factory. If it is necessary to adjust the
minimum idle speed screw, use tool J 38457-A.

The minimum idle speed procedure should be performed when:

Directed to by fuel system diagnosis charts

1. Start engine.
2. Allow the vehicle to idle continuously until the coolant temperature is 80°C (176°F).
3. Disable the generator by grounding the green harness connector plug adjacent to the generator.
4. Enter Diagnostics and select PCM override PS03 "ISC Actuator."

5. Press the "COOLER" button on the CCP to retract the ISC Actuator. This action will disengage the NC compressor and command EGR "OFF."

The Climate Control Center display will change from "50 to 00." The ISC Actuator will slowly retract (about 20 seconds) to a fully retracted
position. Verify that the throttle lever is resting on the minimum idle speed screw. With ISC plunger fully retracted, disconnect ISC Actuator
harness. If the engine stalls at this point, check the throttle blades for deposits that might restrict air flow. If there are deposits, clean the throttle
bores and the area behind and around the throttle plates following the Throttle Body Cleaning Procedure.

6. With the ISC Actuator fully retracted, the plunger should not be touching the throttle lever. If contact is noted, adjust the ISC plunger (turn in)

with pliers or available special tool J 29607 so that it is not touching the throttle lever. The throttle lever must be resting on the minimum air
screw. Make sure that the throttle is not being bound by the throttle or cruise cables. Readjust or repair cables causing throttle to bind.

7. Check the minimum idle speed displayed on the Driver Information Center. If the minimum idle speed is outside of the following limits, proceed

to Step 8. Use an average reading of RPM to check minimum idle rpm.

For Vehicles With 0-500 Odometer Miles:
Minimum idle RPM should be 450-500 RPM.

For Vehicles With More than 500 Odometer Miles:
Minimum idle RPM should be 500-550 RPM. If minimum idle speed is OK, reconnect ISC Actuator harness and return to diagnostics.

Adjustment Is Required:

If engine speed is not within the above limits (too high), check for vacuum leaks at the throttle body, intake manifold, vacuum fittings, tees and
hoses. If the minimum air setting is made with a vacuum leak present, fuel control could be adversely affected throughout all driving ranges.

8. If the minimum idle speed is out of limit, adjust the minimum idle screw to obtain the following idle speed:

Vehicles odometer 0-500 miles: Set minimum idle RPM to 475 RPM.

Vehicle Odometer over 500 miles: Set minimum idle RPM to 525 RPM.

Use tool J 38457-A to adjust the minimum idle speed screw. If the idle speed cannot be corrected, check that the throttle is not held off the
minimum idle speed screw because of linkage binding or interference with the ISC Actuator plunger. Also, check vacuum hoses for leaks and
check for air leaks at the throttle body mounting and intake manifold.

9. Reconnect ISC Actuator harness.

10. Disconnect grounding wire at generator.
