Traction Control Module: Description and Operation
PURPOSE
The The Electronic Brake and Traction Control Module (EBTCM) receives various inputs from the PCM, wheel speed sensors and transmission
sensors. It outputs information to various devices such as the PCM.
The primary function of the EBTCM is to detect wheel locking and wheel slip tendencies, control the brake system while in anti-lock or traction
control mode through the use of torque management. The function of Electronic Brake and Traction Control is integral with the Anti Lock Brake
(ABS) system.
OPERATION
Torque Management is a function of the PCM that reduces engine power under certain conditions. Torque management is used to prevent
overstress of powertrain components, to limit engine power when brakes are applied, and to prevent vehicle damage during certain abusive
maneuvers. The PCM uses manifold vacuum, intake air temperature, spark retard, engine speed, engine coolant temperature, A/C clutch status, and
EGR valve position to calculate and control engine output torque.
TORQUE MANAGEMENT
Engine torque is reduced when needed through the control of various systems:

Timing retard to reduce power.

Brake control to reduce opposite side wheel spin.

Suspension stiffness control (some models when equipped).

Transmission gear range control (some models when equipped).

Disabling of up to half of the injectors.
