Radiator Cooling Fan Motor: Description and Operation
Cooling System
The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) will turn on the cooling fans at an engine temperature in excess of 106° C (223° F), transaxle temperature
greater than 115° C (239° F), when A/C is requested, A/C high side temperature in excess of 70° C (158° F) and or A/C high side refrigerant
temperature sensor fails. The PCM commands fans On if low coolant level is detected and engine coolant temperature is above 76° C (168° F). Under
low coolant level conditions the fans will be commanded Off when engine coolant temperature drops below 76° C (168° F). With correct engine
coolant level the fans are commanded Off at an engine coolant temperature below 102° C 215° F, transaxle temperature below 110° C (230° F) and or
A/C high side temperature below 59° C (138° F).
The PCM will command cooling fans on at high speed when engine temperature exceeds102° C (215° F), engine coolant temperature sensor circuit
fails, transaxle temperature is in excess of 121° C (248° F) or when A/C is requested. Under low engine coolant level conditions the PCM commands
high speed cooling fans On when engine coolant temperature exceeds 85° C (185° F) and switches to low speed fan operation below 80° C (176° F).
