Differential Side Bearings Replacement

Removal Procedure

1. Remove the differential assembly. Refer to Differential Replacement (10.5 Inch Axle)   (See: Service and Repair/Removal and Replacement/Rear

2. Remove the differential side bearings by doing the following:

1. For the 8.6 inch axle, install the differential assembly into a vise.
2. For the 10.5 inch axle, place a block of wood on each side of the differential assembly.

Install the differential assembly into a vise.

3. For the 8.6 inch axle, install the J 22888-20A - puller  (2) and the J 8107-4 - plug  (1) over the differential case side bearing bore.
4. Using the J 22888-20A - puller  (2), and the J 8107-4 - plug  (1) or theJ 36597 - pilot  (1), remove the differential side bearings.

Installation Procedure

1. For the 8.6 inch and the 10.5 inch axles, install the differential side bearings by doing the following:

1. To protect the differential case for the 8.6 inch axle, install the J 8107-4 - plug in the case on the side opposite the bearing installation.
2. For the 8.6 inch axle, install the J 21784 - installer  (2) and the J 8092 - handle  (1), on the differential case bearing as shown.
3. Using a hammer and the J 21784 - installer  (2) or the J 29710 - installer  (2) and the J 8092 - handle  (1), install the side bearings.
