Timing Cover: Service and Repair
TIMING COVER
1.
Disconnect battery ground cable and drain cooling system.
2.
On Brougham and DeVille models, position support rods aside.
3.
Disconnect wiring harness from upper fan shroud clamps.
4.
Remove power steering pump reservoir from upper fan shroud, then remove upper fan shroud.
5.
Remove clutch fan, then loosen alternator and AIR pump mounting bolts and remove drive belts.
6.
Loosen power steering pump retaining bolts and remove vacuum pump drive belts.
7.
Remove A/C compressor mounting bolts, then remove drive belt and position compressor aside with all hoses and lines attached.
8.
Remove alternator and support bracket, then disconnect coolant reservoir hose at water pump.
9.
Disconnect hoses from water pump.
10.
Remove water pump and crankshaft pulleys.
11.
Remove A/C compressor bracket from engine.
12.
Remove timing mark tab from front cover, then remove crankshaft vibration damper.
13.
Remove bolts securing front cover to cylinder block, then remove cover, water pump and lower thermostat housing as an assembly.

14.
Reverse procedure to install. Coat oil pan front lip with suitable sealer. Refer to Fig. 9 and torque bolts ``A,'' ``E'' and ``F'' to 30 ft. lbs. and bolts
``B'' and ``G'' to 15 ft. lbs.
