Central Control Module: Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes
With Scan Tool
Data Link Connectors (DLC)
DATA STREAM
The data stream uses a 8192 baud rate on the data line (CKT 800). During normal vehicle operation, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) serves
as the master of serial data; during on-board diagnostics, the PCM polls other modules in the system for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). The data
stream is accessed through either the 12 or 16 pin Data Link Connector (DLC) shown in the accompanying image
MASTER MODULE
When using the Tech 1 scanner, the Tech 1 will serve as the master module and interrogate the other modules in the system. DTCs will usually show
up immediately in the Tech 1 scanner display, when they have been detected by the Heating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) control or other system's
modules.
DTC DISPLAYS
Current DTCs
Current DTCs will be displayed in the Tech 1 scanner with a "C" following the DTC.
History DTCs
History DTCs will be displayed in the Tech 1 scanner with an "H" following the DTC.
MASS STORAGE CARTRIDGE
The Tech 1 scanner cartridge used for the Tech 1 scanner is mass storage cartridge # 3000003. Refer to the Tech 1 scanner operators manual for
further information on Tech 1 scanner use and procedures.
USING SCAN TOOLS OTHER THAN THE TECH 1
Not all scan testers are compatible with every system. A scan tool that produces faulty or erroneous readings may not be loaded with software
capable of interfacing with the entire data stream. Basing diagnosis on erroneous data or DTCs can obviously result in improper diagnosis and
unnecessary component replacement. Follow the proper instructions, located in the owners manual, for the specific scan tool being used.
