Refrigerant R-12
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
Like the coolant in an engine cooling system, the refrigerant is the substance in the air conditioning system that absorbs, carries and then releases
heat. Although various substances are used as refrigerants in other types of refrigeration systems, automotive air conditioning systems use a type
called Refrigerant-12.
This compound is not explosive, not flammable, not corrosive except when in contact with water, and not poisonous except when in contact with
an open flame or hot metal. It also is soluble in oil.
In automotive air conditioning systems, Refrigerant-12 is kept under a pressure of about 195 kPa (28 psi). At this pressure, Refrigerant -12 boils
(changes from a liquid to a vapor) at approximately -1°C (30°F), which is ideal for air conditioning systems. At normal sea level pressure,
Refrigerant-12 boils at -30°C (-22°F).
