Catalytic Converter: Description and Operation
Dual Bed Monolith Catalytic Converter
The catalytic converter is an emission control device added to the exhaust system to effectively reduce the levels of carbon monoxide (CO),
hydrocarbons (HC), and oxides of nitrogen (NOx), exiting the tailpipe.
The converter allows for a faster chemical reaction to take place and although it enters into the chemical reaction, it remains unchanged, ready to repeat
the process.
A dual bed monolith catalytic converter (Three-Way Oxidation/Reduction catalyst), consisting of three types of catalytic material, is used on this vehicle.
The three types of material are platinum, palladium, and rhodium which lowers levels of CO, HC, and NOx by chemical reaction. Air injected into the
converter increases its efficiency to control HC and CO.
