Wiper Motor: Application and ID
A compound wound type wiper motor is used on Brougham and all other 1989-90 rear wheel drive models except Camaro and Firebird. Motor speeds
on this type motor are determined by varying current flow through the motor shunt field. Two different compound wound motors are used, depending
upon application. A rectangular positive park motor is used on Cavalier, and a round motor is used on models with depressed park wipers.
A permanent magnet type motor is used on Camaro, Firebird, front wheel drive models and Prizm. Permanent magnet motors have three brushes,
common, low and high speed. Motor speeds are determined by completing the circuit to the low or high speed brush, while the common brush is used at
both speeds.
There are two types of windshield wiper motor parking, non-depressed and depressed. Depressed park refers to the extra travel to lower the wipers
below the hood line. Non-depressed refers to windshield wipers being visible on the windshield glass in the park position.
A two speed wiper motor is used on Prizm and Storm.
