5. Drain the lubricant into a suitable container.

Installation Procedure

1. Install the rear axle cover. Refer to Rear Axle Housing Cover and Gasket Replacement (8.6, 9.5 Inch Axles)   (See: Transmission and

2. Fill the rear axle with axle lubricant. Use the proper fluid. Refer to Approximate Fluid Capacities and Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers  

(See: Transmission and Drivetrain/Differential Assembly/Specifications/Fluid Type Specifications).

Caution:  Refer to Fastener Caution   (See: Service Precautions/Vehicle Damage Warnings/Fastener Caution).

3. Install the rear axle fill plug and tighten to 33 Nm (24 lb ft).
4. Lower the vehicle.

Removal Procedure

1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle   See: Vehicle Lifting/Service and Repair.
2. Remove the drain plug.
