Camshaft: Description and Operation

The cast iron camshafts are used in conjunction with iron lifter contact feet to provide maximum wear resistance. Lifter rotation is ensured under all
conditions by the camshaft lobe taper, lifter offset and spherical surface of the lifter contact area.

The camshafts are driven by a double-row roller chain. Chain motion is controlled by a hydraulic tensioner and three dampers.  In order to reduce 
camshaft drive noise, rubber isolated dampers, modified tooth profiles, a front cover mass damper and modified tensioner load and damping are
employed.

The camshaft carriers are separate components from the cylinder head. Camshafts are run directly on the carrier and cover without bearing inserts. The
carrier and cover are split at the bearing center line to allow for the use of small diameter bearings.
