Relay Rod: Service and Repair

Tool Required: 
-

J 24319-01 Steering Linkage Puller

-

J 29193 Steering Linkage installer (12 mm)

-

J 29194 Steering Linkage Installer (14 mm)

REMOVAL   

NOTE:  

-

Use the proper tool to separate all tie rod and ball joints.

-

Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle with jack stands.

Remove or disconnect the following:
1. Steering shock absorber from the relay rod.
2. Inner tie rod ball joint from the relay rod (if equipped). 
3. Idler arm ball stud nut. Do not reuse.
4. Pitman arm nut. Do not reuse.
5. Relay rod from the idler arm ball stud using J 24319-01.
6. Relay rod from the pitman arm ball stud using J 24319-01.
7. Drag link from pitman shaft (if equipped). 
8. Inspect the following:

-

Threads on the tie rod for damage.

-

Ball stud threads for damage.

-

Ball stud seals for excessive wear.

9. Clean the threads on the ball stud.

INSTALLATION,    

CAUTION:  Always use the correct fastener in the proper location. When you replace a fastener, use ONLY the exact part number for that
application. The manufacturer will call out those fasteners that require a replacement after removal. The manufacturer will also call out the fasteners
that require thread lockers or thread sealant. UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED, do not use supplemental coatings (paints, greases, or other
