Crankshaft Main Bearing Seal: Service and Repair

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

1. Open the hood.
2. Disconnect the battery negative cable from the battery. 

CAUTION:  Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.

3. Raise the vehicle and support with safety stands. 
4. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
5. Remove the clutch from the crankshaft if equipped. 
6. Remove the flywheel from the crankshaft. 
7. Remove the crankshaft rear oil seal from the engine block.

IMPORTANT:  When removing the crankshaft rear oil seal from the cylinder block be careful not to nick the crankshaft sealing surface.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

Tools Required

J 38841 Rear Oil Seal Installer

1. Install the crankshaft rear oil seal as follows:

-

Lubricate the inner and outer diameter of the crankshaft rear oil seal with clean engine oil.

Install the crankshaft rear oil seal the J 38841.

-

Use the J 38841 to install the crankshaft rear oil seal on the crankshaft.

-

Remove the J 38841 from the crankshaft.

2. Install the flywheel to the crankshaft. 
3. Install the clutch to the crankshaft if equipped. 
4. Install the transmission to the engine block.

For the automatic transmission. 

-

For the manual transmission.

-

Lower the vehicle. 

5. Connect the battery negative cables to the battery. 
6. Close the hood.
