Air Filter Element: Description and Operation

Air Cleaner Components

Purpose:

The air filter element is used to prevent dirt and other debris from entering the engine and causing possible engine damage. It also functions as a
flame arrester.

Operation:

Warning:

The air cleaner element should be in place at all times unless removal is necessary for repair or maintenance. To help reduce the risk of
personal injury and property damage, be sure that no one is near the engine compartment before starting the engine with the air cleaner
removed. If engine backfire occurs with the air cleaner removed, there could be a burst of flame, and possibly other fire in the engine
compartment.

Do not use starting fluids -- immediate engine damage can result.

Caution:

Take care not to let objects fall into the engine if the air cleaner is removed. If the engine is running, suction can pull loose objects into the
engine. Objects pulled or dropped into the engine can cause costly engine damage.

Location:

The air cleaner is located on top of the fresh air intake manifold.
