Remove oil pan. Remove the two flange mounting bolts and nut and remove pump. Remove the four cover retaining screws, cover, gears and shaft
and regulator parts, Fig. 13.
Do not attempt to remove or disturb oil pickup tube.
Clean and inspect pump. If any of the following conditions are found, the oil pump should be replaced:
1.
Inspect pump body for cracks or wear.
2.
Inspect gears for excessive wear or damage.
3.
Inspect shaft for looseness in housing.
4.
Inspect inside of cover for wear which may permit oil to leak past the ends of the gears.
5.
Inspect oil pickup screen.
To assemble, install drive gear and shaft in housing, then install idler gear with smooth side facing cover. Install cover and screws and torque screws
to 105 inch lbs. Make sure that shaft turns freely. Install regulatory valve spring, retainer and pin. To install pump, align driveshaft with distributor
tang, then position pump on engine and install retaining bolts and nut. On 1982---84 models torque bolts and nuts to 20 to 22 ft. lbs.
