Subject:
OCCASIONAL STALL AT STOPS OR ON DECELERATION
Model and Year:
1989 CAMARO WITH 5.0L TBI (L03) (VIN CODE E) ENGINE
TO:
ALL CHEVROLET DEALERS
Condition:
A few 1989 Camaros equipped with the 5.0L TBI (L03) engine may occasionally stall after a complete stop, or at low speeds during deceleration.
Cause:
The Electronic Control Module (ECM) uses an input from the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) to determine vehicle speed. The circuit from the optical
buffer to the ECM is susceptible to signal oscillations which may give an incorrect VSS signal. If the ECM reads the vehicle speed over the top speed
limit, a stall may occur.
Correction:
Install Vehicle Speed Sensor Buffer part number 16154861.
PROCEDURE:
Following applicable service manual sections:
1.
Remove lower left side hush panel.
2.
Lower steering column (do not remove).
3.
Remove front instrument cluster face plate.
4.
Remove instrument cluster (to include speedo cable connection behind speedometer).
5.
Remove VSS buffer attached to rear of instrument cluster.
6.
Replace VSS buffer with new buffer part number 16154861.
7.
Reinstall cluster and face plate.
8.
Reinstall steering column and lower hush panel.
