Radiator Cooling Fan Motor: Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview
System Check
1.
With engine cold and idling, turn A/C selector, if equipped, to NORM. On VIN E, coolant fan should turn on. On VINs S, T, F and 8, coolant fan,
and auxiliary coolant fan if equipped, should turn on when A/C control head pressure exceeds 233 psi.
2.
With engine coolant below operating temperature, move A/C selector to off. On VIN E, coolant fan should turn off. On VIN S, T, F and 8, coolant
fan, and auxiliary coolant fan if equipped, should turn off when A/C control head pressure falls below 233 psi.
3.
With engine warm, run engine at fast idle foe several minutes. Ensure coolant fan turns on before coolant temperature indicator lights or before
coolant temperature gauge needle indicates hot.
4.
Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Coolant fan, and auxiliary coolant fan if equipped, should turn off.
Troubleshooting Hints
1.
Check FAN/FP fuse if coolant fan does not run.
2.
Check that ground G118 (3.1L/V6-192), G112 (5.0L/V8-305 VIN E) or G104 (5.0L/V8-305 VIN F and 5.7L/V8-350) is clean and tight.
3.
Check fusible link.
4.
If coolant fan runs with ignition switch off, replace coolant fan relay.
