Ignition Coil: Service and Repair
High Energy Ignition (HEI) System - PFI
Integral Coil
REMOVAL
-
Remove distributor cap.
-
Remove coil cover attaching screws, and lift off cover.

Remove coil attaching screws and lift ignition coil and leads from cap.
-
Push up on the coil leads to dislodge them from the cap, otherwise they could break.
-
Remove arc seal and brush with spring.
INSTALLATION

Install brush with spring.
-
Install arc seal.
-
Install coil into cap. Guide coil leads into cap, otherwise they could break.
-
Install coil cover and attaching screws.
-
Install distributor cap.
Non-Integral Coil
REMOVAL
-
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
-
Disconnect the engine control switch and tachometer connectors at the coil, if equipped.
-
Disconnect coil to distributor lead at the coil.
-
Remove screws holding the coil bracket and coil to the engine.
-
Remove coil bracket and coil.
-
Drill out rivets holding the coil to the coil bracket.
-
Remove coil from coil bracket.
INSTALLATION
-
Install coil to coil bracket.
-
Install screws to hold coil to coil bracket.
-
Install coil and coil bracket to engine. Tighten screws to 22 Nm (16 ft lb).
-
Connect coil to distributor lead.
-
Connect engine control switch and tachometer connectors at the coil, if equipped.

Connect negative battery cable.
