Steering Column: Service and Repair
Steering Column - Removal and Installation

CHEVROLET REAR WHEEL DRIVE EXC. CHEVETTE
REMOVAL
Except 1984---87 Corvette

1.

Disconnect battery ground cable.

2.

Remove nut and bolt from upper intermediate shaft coupling, then separate coupling from lower end of steering column.

3.

Disconnect shift linkage from lower shift lever.

4.

Remove left lower instrument panel trim and/or lap cooler duct, then disconnect all electrical wire connectors from steering column.

5.

Remove screws attaching toe plate to dash panel.

6.

Remove nuts attaching steering column bracket to instrument panel.

7.

Disconnect shift position indicator cable, if equipped with automatic transmission, then withdraw steering column from vehicle.

INSTALLATION
Chevrolet Caprice & Impala; 1985---86 Pontiac Parisienne & 1987,88 Safari

1.

Assemble steering column support bracket (A) to mast jacket (B). Torque attaching screws to 30 ft. lbs. in the following sequence, (C), (D), (E)
and (F), Fig. 5.

2.

Position steering column guide bracket (G) over studs and steering column support, then install screw (H) and nut (J).

3.

Install wire connect to ignition switch (K).

4.

Position steering column (B) to steering column guide bracket (G) and instrument panel, then loosely install capsule nuts (L).

5.

Install intermediate shaft over column shaft, then install nut and bolt. Torque nut to 55 ft. lbs.

6.

Position cover and seal (M) to dash panel, then install screw (N) at upper lefthand corner of cover and seal. Torque screw to 45 inch lbs.

7.

Install screw (P) at upper right hand corner of cover and seal. Torque screw to 45 inch lbs.

8.

Install remaining screws (R) at slotted locations in cover and seal. Torque screws to 45 inch lbs.

9.

Tighten capsule nuts (L) to 25 ft. lbs.
