Knock Sensor: Description and Operation
Operation
In vehicles equipped with 6 or 8 cylinder engines, Electronic Spark Control (ESC) is used in conjunction with EST to reduce spark advance when
detonation occurs. A knock sensor signals a separate ESC controller to retard the timing when it senses knock. The ESC controller signals the
ECM which will reduce spark advance until no more signals are received from the knock sensor.
