If a condition is experienced on 1985 Impala/Caprice or 1986 Caprice of intermittent or totally inoperative fuel and/or water temperature gages loose
instrument panel retaining clips may be the cause. The retaining clips hold the gage in the instrument panel housing, and provide electrical contact
between the instrument panel printed circuit and the gage.
If the above condition is experienced by a vehicle operator the retaining clips should be inspected to insure they fit tightly and make a good electrical
connection.
To check the retaining clips, remove the instrument panel gage cluster per Service Manual instructions. Check for loose clips on the back of the
instrument panel. If the clips are loose, reinstall them being sure they are tight. Replace the gage cluster.
