Steering Gear: Service and Repair
Manual Steering Gear Replace
On models where shield is installed, remove shield from coupling.
1.
Remove nuts, washers and bolts at steering coupling.
2.
Remove pitman arm nut and washer from sector shaft and mark relation of arm position to shaft.
3.
Use a suitable puller to remove pitman arm.
4.
Unfasten gear from frame and remove assembly.
5.
Reverse procedure to install. Torque gear mounting bolts to 30 ft. lbs. on 1982 Corvette, 80 ft. lbs. on 1982 models except Corvette or 70 ft. lbs.
on 1983---88 models except Corvette. Torque shaft coupling nuts to 30 ft. lbs. Torque pitman arm retaining nut to 185 ft. lbs.
