Fuel Gauge Sender: Service and Repair
Fuel Tank Assembly
FUEL TANK REMOVAL:
1.
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2.
Relieve the fuel system pressure. See: Engine, Cooling and Exhaust/Engine/Cylinder Head Assembly/Fuel Pressure Release/Service and Repair
3.
Raise the vehicle.
4.
Drain fuel tank.
a.
Loosen the fuel filler cap.
b.
Clean the fuel filler vent hose connection and surrounding area before disconnecting to avoid getting dirt or other crud in the tank.
c.
Loosen the filler vent hose clamp.
d.
Wrap a shop towel around the vent hose and slowly remove.
e.
Use a hand operated fuel pump device to drain fuel through the vent tube.
5.
Disconnect the fuel feed pipe at the filter inlet and move aside.
6.
Disconnect the fuel return pipe assembly from the fuel return pipe and move aside.
7.
Disconnect vapor hose from the connection (at the front of the tank).
8.
Disconnect the rubber exhaust pipe hangers to allow the exhaust system to drop slightly.
9.
Remove the exhaust pipe heat shield bolts and heat shield.
10.
Support the fuel tank and disconnect the front fuel tank retaining strap bolts.
CAUTION: DO NOT bend the fuel tank straps as this may damage the straps.
11.
Lower the tank enough to disconnect the fuel sender harness retaining clips.
12.
Disconnect the fuel tank vent hose from the sender.
13.
Disconnect the vapor purge hose from the vapor tubing.
14.
Remove the tank from the vehicle.
Reverse procedure for installation.
INSTALLATION NOTES
1.
Once fuel tank is installed and filled, turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position for two seconds, then turn the ignition switch to the "OFF"
position for ten seconds. Then turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position and check for fuel leaks.
2.
Perform idle learn procedure.
a. Turn the ignition switch "ON."
b. Ground the engine diagnostic lead for about five seconds.
c. START the engine and check for proper idle operation.
