Radiator Cooling Fan Motor: Description and Operation
On models equipped with electric engine cooling fans, the battery ground cable should be disconnected whenever underhood service is performed.
1982 CORVETTE AUXILIARY FAN
DESCRIPTION
Current is supplied to the auxiliary fan motor through a 30 amp. circuit breaker located in the fuse panel. The fan motor is controlled by an engine
temperature switch located at the rear of the right hand cylinder head. When engine temperature reaches approximately 238 degrees F, the engine
temperature switch will close and the fan motor will operate to provide supplementary air flow in addition to that supplied by the engine cooling fan.
When engine temperature decreases to approximately 201 degrees F, the engine temperature switch will open and current will no longer be supplied to
the fan motor. The fan motor will only operate when the ignition switch is in the ``Run'' position.
FAN MOTOR, REPLACE
1.
Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove fresh air scoop.
2.
Remove engine cooling fan, then disconnect fan motor wire connector from vehicle wire connector. Remove retainer securing fan motor wiring to
chassis, if equipped.
3.
Remove upper fan shroud mounting bolts, then remove fan shroud and auxiliary fan motor as an assembly.
4.
Remove nuts attaching auxiliary fan motor to fan shroud, then disconnect wiring from fan motor and remove motor.
5.
Reverse procedure to install.
