Expansion Valve: Service and Repair

Thermal Expansion Valve Replacement

Tools Required

J 39400-A Halogen Leak Detector

Removal Procedure

1. Recover the refrigerant from the air conditioning (A/C) system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging  (See: Service and

Repair/Procedures/Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging) .

2. Remove the rear evaporator line assembly. Refer to Air Conditioning Evaporator Rear Tube Replacement  (See: Hose/Line HVAC/Service and

Repair/Air Conditioning Evaporator Rear Tube Replacement) .

3. Remove the thermal expansion valve (TXV) to evaporator core mounting bolts.
4. Disconnect the TXV from the evaporator and remove from the vehicle.
5. Remove and discard the evaporator core seal washers.
6. Cap or tape off the evaporator core.

Installation Procedure

1. Remove the cap or tape from the evaporator core.
2. Install new seal washers to the evaporator core. Refer to Sealing Washer Replacement  (See: Coupler HVAC/A/C Coupler O-ring/Service and

Repair/Sealing Washer Replacement) .
