Diesel MFI Pump: Service and Repair

1.
Disconnect battery ground cables.
2.
Remove air cleaner and intake, then install protective screens J-29664.
3.
Disconnect injection pump fuel solenoid and housing pressure cold advance electrical leads, then the fuel return pipe.
4.
Mark position of TPS switch or vacuum regulator valve to aid in reassembly, then remove throttle rod and return springs.
5.
Loosen, then position fast idle solenoid aside.
6.
Remove throttle cable bracket.
7.
Install tool J-29601 over throttle shaft, with slots of tool engaging shaft pin, Fig. 34. Position spring clip over throttle shaft advance cam, then
tighten wing nut. Pull tool off throttle shaft without loosening wing nut, to provide proper alignment for reassembly. Loosen face cam screw.
8.
Drive pin from throttle shaft, then remove throttle shaft advance cam and fiber washer. Remove any burrs from shaft.
9.
Clean injection pump cover, upper portion of pump, throttle shaft and guide stud area.
10.
Remove injection pump cover attaching screws and cover. Ensure no dirt or foreign material enters pump, since damage to pump or engine may
result.
11.
Observe metering valve spring to top of guide position, Fig. 33, to aid reassembly.
12.
Remove guide stud and washer, noting location of parts.
13.
Rotate min-max governor assembly, Fig. 33, then remove from throttle shaft. If idle governor spring becomes disengaged from throttle block,
reinstall spring with tightly wound coils facing toward throttle block.
