Brake Pedal Assy: Adjustments
BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL
At frequent intervals, the brake pedal travel should be checked. Travel is the distance the brake pedal moves toward the floor from a full released
position. This check should be made with the brakes cold and about 445 N (100 lb.) of force on the brake pedal using a Brake Pedal Effort Gauge (J
28662 or equivalent).
1. Apply the brake pedal at least ten times with the engine off before making the check.
2. Measure the distance from the bottom of the steering wheel to the brake pedal.
a. Take the first measurement (A) with the brake pedal released.
b. Take the second measurement (B) with the brake pedal applied with about 445 N (100 lb.) of force, using a brake pedal effort gage.
c. Subtract the measurement A from measurement B. The difference should be 60-65 mm (2.3-2.6 inches) for vacuum assist vehicles and
85-90 mm (3.3-3.6 inches) for hydraulic assist vehicles.
d. If the brake pedal travel is excessive. Diagnosis the Brake System. See: Testing and Inspection
