Backing Plate: Service and Repair

WARNING:  When servicing brake parts, do not create dust by grinding or sanding brake linings, by cleaning brake parts with a dry brush or
with compressed air. Many aftermarket brake parts may contain asbestos fibers which can become airborne if dust is created during servicing.
Breathing dust containing asbestos fibers may cause serious bodily harm. A water dampened cloth or water based solution should be used to
remove any dust on brake parts. Equipment is commercially available to perform this washing function. These wet methods will prevent fibers
from becoming airborne.

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT

1. Raise the vehicle and support it with safety stands. 
2. The tire and wheel.
3. Install the pin to the park brake lever.
4. The rear brake drum.
5. The rear brake shoes. 
6. The rear wheel cylinder.
7. The rear brake anchor pin.
8. The rear brake backing plate retaining bolts and washers.
9. The rear brake backing plate from the vehicle.

INSTALL OR CONNECT

1. The rear brake backing plate.
2. The rear brake backing plate retaining bolts and washers.

Tighten the rear brake braking plate retaining bolts to 140 Nm (104 ft. lbs.).

3. The rear wheel cylinder
4. The rear brake shoes.
5. The rear brake drum.
6. Remove the pin to the park brake lever.
7. Adjust the rear brakes.
8. Bleed the brake system.

10. Adjust the parking brake if necessary. See: Adjustments
