Brake Master Cylinder: Service and Repair
Cautions, Fluid Leaks and Filling the Reservoir
CAUTION:
^
Do not fill the brake master cylinder reservoir, unless there is a hydraulic repair. Failure to follow these instructions will result in premature brake
lining wear and misdiagnosis.
^
Do not use fluid that has a petroleum base. Do not use a container, that has been used for petroleum based fluids or is wet with water. Petroleum
based fluids cause swelling and distortion of rubber parts in the hydraulic brake system and water lowers the brake fluids boiling point. Keep all
fluid containers capped to prevent contamination.
FLUID LEAKS
There are two ways that the brake fluid level may be low in the brake master cylinder:
^
Normal brake lining wear will lower the brake fluid level.
^
Hydraulic leak.
Filling Brake Master Cylinder
FILLING THE RESERVOIR
1. Thoroughly clean the top of brake master cylinder reservoir cover before removal.
NOTE: This helps prevent dirt from getting into the brake master cylinder reservoir.
2. Remove the brake master cylinder cover and diaphragm and add fluid as required to bring the level to the full mark located inside the brake master
cylinder reservoir.
CAUTION: Use Delco Supreme No. 11 Hydraulic Brake Fluid (GM P/N 1052535) or an equivalent DOT 3 motor vehicle brake fluid.
