Lifter / Lash Adjuster: Service and Repair
Replacement

Tool Required

J 9290-01 Valve Lifter Remover, or Equivalent.

1. Remove the applicable valve rocker arm cover.
2. Remove the intake manifold. 
3. Remove the pushrods. 

4. Remove the valve lifter guide retainer and bolts.

5. Remove the valve lifters.

a. Remove the valve lifters one at a time.
b. Place the valve lifters in an organizer rack.
c. The valve lifters must be installed in the same bore from which they were removed.

6. Inspect the valve lifter for scuffing or scoring. If the valve lifter wall is worn or damaged, also check the mating bore in the block.
7. Check the fit of each valve lifter in its mating bore in the block. If the clearance is excessive, try a new valve lifter.
8. Inspect the roller for freedom of movement.
9. Inspect the roller for the following conditions, flat spots, Pits, missing or broken needle bearings.

10. If the roller is worn, pitted, or damaged, check the mating camshaft lobe.
