Balance Shaft: Service and Repair
Balance Shaft - Removal

Tool Required

J 38834 Balance Shaft Bearing Service Kit, Or Equivalent
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the engine cover.
3. Remove the air cleaner assembly and the intake duct.
4. Remove the coolant reservoir.
5. Drain the cooling system.
6. Remove the air conditioning compressor, the bracket, and the accessory drive bracket.
7. Remove the radiator.
8. Remove the air conditioning condenser.
9. Remove the engine cooling fan.
10. Drain the engine oil.
NOTE: Use care when removing the front cover from the front of the oil pan seal.
11. Remove the engine front cover.
12. Remove the water pump.
13. Remove the camshaft sprocket bolts.
14. Remove the timing chain, the camshaft sprocket, and the balance shaft drive gear.
NOTE:

Service the balance shaft and the front bearing only as an assembly.

Use only the correct tools for bearing and shaft replacement.

Do not remove the front bearing from the balance shaft.

Service the balance shaft drive and driven gears only as a set. The set includes the balance shaft driven gear bolt.
15. Remove the balance shaft driven gear.
