Crankshaft Main Bearing: Testing and Inspection
Clean and Inspect
NOTE:

Replace the clutch pilot bearing located in the end of the crankshaft anytime a manual transmission or clutch is removed. A worn clutch pilot
bearing will not properly support or align the manual transmission input shaft.

Do not scratch the crankshaft bearing journals.

Do not scratch the crankshaft bearing surfaces.
1. Clean the crankshaft in solvent. Remove all sludge or restrictions from the oil passages with compressed air.
2. Clean the crankshaft bearings in solvent. Wipe clean with a soft cloth, do not scratch the bearing surfaces.
NOTE: Generally, the lower crankshaft bearings except the #1 bearing, show the greatest wear and distress from fatigue. If, upon inspection, a
lower crank bearing is suitable for reuse, it can be assumed that the upper crank bearing is also satisfactory. If a lower crank bearing shows
evidence of wear of damage, both the upper and lower crankshaft bearings must be replaced.
3. Inspect the crankshaft bearing journals and thrust bearing surfaces for scoring, nicks, or other damage.
