Valve Spring: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

Tools Required
-

J 23590 Spark Plug Port Adapter

-

J 5892-D Valve Spring Compressor

-

J 22794 Spark Plug Port Adapter

-

Or Equivalents

1. Remove the valve rocker arms. 
2. Remove the spark plug at the cylinder to be serviced. 
3. Remove the valve keys using the following procedure 

a. Install the spark plug port adapter into the spark plug hole.
b. Apply compressed air in order to hold the valves in place.
c. Install a valve rocker arm nut.
d. Compress the valve spring using the valve spring compressor.
e. Remove the valve keys.
f.

Carefully relieve the valve spring tension.

g. Remove the valve spring compressor.

4. Remove the cap and the spring.
5. Remove the valve seal.

INSTALLATION 

1. Install a new seal. Install the seal over the valve stem and seat it against the head.
2. Install the spring and the cap.
3. Install the valve keys using the following procedure 

a. With air pressure applied to the cylinder using spark plug port adapter, compress the valve spring with valve spring compressor.
b. Install the valve keys. Use grease in order to hold them in place, if necessary.   
c. Carefully release the valve spring pressure. Make sure the valve keys stay in place.
d. Remove the valve spring compressor and the spark plug port adapter.

4. Install the spark plugs.
5. Install the valve rocker arms. 
6. Adjust the valves.  
7. Install the valve rocker arm cover.
