Exhaust Pressure Regulator Vacuum Valve: Description and Operation

EPR Valve

Purpose:

The EPR valve is used to increase exhaust back pressure during idle, which increases the exhaust flow through the EGR system.

Operation:

The vacuum pump supplies the EPR solenoid with vacuum. The ECM energizes the EPR solenoid allowing vacuum to pass to the EPR vacuum
actuator which in turn closes the EPR valve restrictor plate which is normally open. The increase in exhaust back pressure forces exhaust gases
through the EGR system.

Location:

The EPR valve is installed between the exhaust manifold and the exhaust pipe.
