Brake Drum: Service and Repair

CAUTION:  When installing new brake drums, do not refinish the braking surface. These parts are already at the correct level of surface finish. 

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT

1. Raise the vehicle and support it with safety stands.
2. The tire and wheel from the vehicle.
3. Install the pin to the park brake lever.
4. Reference mark the rear brake drum to the axle relationship.
5. The rear brake drum retainers if present. 
6. The rear brake drum from the vehicle. 

INSTALL OR CONNECT

1. The rear brake drum to the vehicle. 
2. Reference mark the rear brake drum to the axle relationship. 
3. The rear brake drum retainers, if present. 
4. Remove the pin from the park brake lever.
5. The tire and wheel to the vehicle.
6. Adjust the rear brakes.

a. Remove the adjusting hole plug in the rear brake backing plate.
b. Turn the rear brake shoe adjuster counterclockwise until the wheel can just be turned by hand.

NOTE:  The rear brake drag should be equal at both wheels.

c. Back off the rear brake shoe adjuster 33 notches.

NOTE: Brakes should have no drag after the adjuster has been backed off about 15 notches.

d. Install the adjusting hole plug in the rear brake backing plate.

7. Lower the vehicle.
