Wheel Cylinder: Service and Repair
Replacement

WARNING:  When servicing brake parts, do not create dust by grinding or sanding brake linings, by cleaning brake parts with a dry brush or
with compressed air. Many earlier models or aftermarket brake parts may contain asbestos fibers which can become airborne if dust is created
during servicing. Breathing dust containing asbestos fibers may cause serious bodily harm. A water dampened cloth or water based solution
should be used to remove any dust on brake parts. Equipment is commercially available to perform this washing function. These wet methods
will prevent fibers from becoming airborne.

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT

1. Raise the vehicle and support it with safety stands. 
2. The tire and wheel from the vehicle.
3. Install the pin to the park brake lever.
4. The rear brake drums. 
5. The rear brake shoes. 
6. The brake pipe from the rear brake cylinder. 
7. The rear wheel cylinder retaining bolts.
8. The rear wheel cylinder from the vehicle.

INSTALL OR CONNECT

1. The rear wheel cylinder to the vehicle.
2. The rear wheel cylinder retaining bolts.

Tighten the rear wheel cylinder retaining bolts to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).

3. The brake pipe to the rear wheel cylinder.
4. The rear brake shoes. 
5. The rear brake drums. 
6. Remove the pin to the park brake lever.
7. The tire and wheel to the vehicle.
8. Bleed the brake system. See: Hydraulic System/Service and Repair 

9. Adjust the rear brakes.

a. Remove the adjusting hole plug in the rear brake backing plate.
b. Turn the rear brake shoe adjuster counterclockwise until the wheel can just be turned by hand.

NOTE:  The rear brake drag should be equal at both wheels.

c. Back off the rear brake shoe adjuster 33 notches.

NOTE:  Brakes should have no drag after the adjuster has been backed off about 15 notches.

d. Install the adjusting hole plug in the rear brake backing plate.

10. Adjust the parking brake if necessary.
