K 2500 Truck 4WD V8-454 7.4L (1988)
INSTALLATION
1.
Install new upper seal half as follows. An oil seal installation tool, Fig. 14, should be fabricated (if not provided with the seal kit), to prevent
seal damage during installation:
a. Coat seal lips lightly with clean engine oil. Keep oil off of seal mating surface.
b. Position tip of tool between crankshaft and seal seat in the engine block, Fig. 15.
c. Position seal half between crankshaft and tip of tool.
d. Ensure oil seal lip is positioned toward front of engine.
e. Roll seal around crankshaft using the tool as a ``shoe horn'' to protect the seal bead from block seal surface sharp corner. The installation tool
must remain in position until the seal half is properly positioned with both ends flush with the block.
f.
Remove tool carefully as not to withdraw the seal half.

Install lower seal half as follows:
a. Coat seal lips lightly with engine oil. Keep oil off of the seal mating surface.
b. Insert seal half into rear main bearing cap. Use tool to protect the seal half from the sharp edges. Feed seal half into the rear main bearing cap,
using light finger pressure. Ensure oil seal lip faces front of engine, Fig. 15.

Install rear main bearing cap and lower main bearing cap as follows:
a. Apply a brush on type oil sealing compound to the mating surface on the engine block and cap as shown in Fig. 16. Do not allow sealant to
contact either the crankshaft or rear oil seal.
b. Apply engine oil to the lower main bearing.
c. Position cap onto the block. Install cap attaching bolts.
d. Tighten rear main bearing cap attaching bolts temporarily to 10 ft. lbs.
e. Tap end of crankshaft first rearward, then forward with a hammer. This will align the rear main bearing and crankshaft thrust surfaces.
