Camshaft: Service and Repair
Removal
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the air cleaner intake duct
3. Remove the grill. Refer to Body and Frame.
4. Remove the radiator and the air conditioning condenser as an assembly. Refer to Heating and Air Conditioning.
5. Remove the generator and the generator bracket. Refer to Starting and Charging.
6. Remove the valve rocker arm covers.
7. Remove the engine front cover, please refer to Engine, Cooling and Exhaust/Engine/Timing Components/Timing Cover/Service and Repair/ See:

8. Remove the intake manifold.
9. Remove the pushrods and the valve lifters.
10. Remove the timing chain and sprockets.
11. Remove camshaft retainer bolts and retainer.
12. Install two or three 5/16-18 bolts 4-5 inches long into the camshaft threaded holes. Use these bolts as a handle for the camshaft removal.
13. Pull the camshaft from the block. Use care to prevent damage to the camshaft bearings.
14. Clean, inspect, repair or replace the camshaft and related components.
15. Remove the two or three 5/16-18 bolts. Use as a handle from the camshaft.
