Valve Stem Oil Seal: Service and Repair

J 23590 Spark Plug Port Adapter

J 5892-C Valve Spring Compressor

REMOVAL

1. Remove the valve rocker arm cover.
2. Remove the valve rocker arms. 
3. Remove the spark plugs. Refer to Powertrain Management.
4. Remove the valve keepers as follows: 

(1) Install the spark plug port adapter into the spark plug hole.
(2) Apply compressed air in order to hold the valves in place.
(3) Install the valve rocker amp bolt.
(4) Use the valve spring compressor to compress the valve spring.
(5) Remove the valve keepers. 

NOTE:  Do not release the compressed air from the cylinder. The valve will fall into the cylinder and may cause damage.

(6) Carefully release the spring tension. Remove the valve spring compressor.

5. Remove the cap and the spring.
6. Remove the valve stem oil seal.

INSTALLATION

1. Install the valve stem oil seal.
2. Install the spring with the damper.
3. Install the cap.
4. Install the valve keepers as follows:

(1) With compressed air still applied, compress the valve spring with the valve spring compressor.
(2) Install the valve keepers. Apply grease to hold the valve keepers in place.
(3) Carefully release the spring tension. Make sure the valve keepers do not move. Remove the valve spring compressor.
(4) Release compressed air from the cylinder.
(5) Remove spark plug port adapter.

5. Install the spark plugs. Refer to Powertrain Management.
6. Install the valve rocker arms.
7. Install the valve rocker arm cover.
