Air/Fuel Mixture: Adjustments
Medium Duty

NOTE:  For curb idle speed specifications see; under hood label or Idle Specifications.

1980-82 Medium Duty Vehicles (40-60 & 4500-6500 Series)

Adjustment Set Up
-

Air cleaner must remain in place during adjustments. 

-

A/C control, if equipped, must be in ON position on V8-350 engines, and in OFF position on all other engines. 

-

Perform adjustment5 with transmission in neutral on all models.

6-292 & V8-350 Engines

1. Disconnect and plug vacuum hoses as directed by Emission Control Information Label.
2. Remove limiter cap from each mixture screw, taking care not to damage screws.

NOTE:  1982 V8-350 California engines have a bracket installed over mixture screws to prevent tampering. To remove bracket, SEE 
Concealment Plug Removal.

3. Connect tachometer to engine--following manufacturer's instructions. Start engine and run at fast idle until it reaches normal operating

temperature.

4. Adjust idle speed to rpm specified for lean drop adjustment:

a. On 6-292 engines, adjust idle speed to 775 rpm by rotating solenoid assembly.
b. On V8-350 engines, adjust idle speed to 750 rpm with throttle stop screw.

5. Turn mixture screws counter-clockwise (richer) equally until maximum idle rpm is obtained, then repeat step 4.
6. Repeat step 5 to insure correct adjustment.
7. Turn each mixture screw clockwise (leaner) equally, 1/8 of a turn at a time, until specified curb idle speed is obtained.
8. On 6-292 engines:

a. Disconnect wiring harness connector to solenoid.
b. Adjust low idle speed to specifications with 1/8 inch allen screw inside rear of solenoid.
c. Connect wire to solenoid.

9. Connect vacuum hoses to proper fittings and install bracket on 1982 V8-350 California engines.

V8-366, 427 & 4M

1. Disconnect and plug vacuum hoses as directed by Emission Control Information Label.
2. Remove limiter cap from each mixture screw, taking care not to damage screws.

NOTE:  Idle mixture screws on 1982 California engines are sealed to prevent adjustment. SEE Concealment Plug Removal to remove plugs.

3. Turn each mixture screw in (clockwise) until lightly seated, then back screws out 2 turns.
4. Connect tachometer and vacuum gauge to engine following manufacturers instructions.
5. Start engine and run at fast idle until it reaches normal operating temperature.
6. Adjust curb idle speed to specifications with solenoid plunger screw.
7. Adjust mixture screws one at a time. Turn each screw in (clockwise) until engine speed begins to drop, then back screw out to obtain maximum

rpm at the highest steady vacuum reading (best idle).

8. Repeat steps 6 and 7 until best idle is obtained at specified curb idle speed.
9. Disconnect wiring harness connector to solenoid and adjust low idle speed to specifications with throttle stop screw on carburetor.

10. Connect wire to solenoid and connect vacuum hoses to proper fittings.
